Workshop:
Surface decoration and glazing
Instructor:
Violaine Ulmer
One of the physical qualities of jewellery is its small size, which creates particular difficulties for ceramic jewellery, particularly in terms of surface decoration, glazing and firing.
This course will look at these issues from a practical point of view.
This course is aimed at people who have already practised ceramics, and more specifically working with porcelain. Priority will be given to those who have taken the ‘Essentials’ course.

While the ‘Essentials‘ course lays the foundations of ceramic jewellery, particularly in terms of shapes, this course looks at the possibilities of body and surface decoration at different stages of drying or firing (raw, dry, bisque, glazed).
We will work with porcelain in plastic state, slip casting, engobes and glazes, which we will make, but also with golds and lustres.
As well as decorating, we’ll look at the issues involved in firing small pieces (rules and tips for firing, kiln calibration, temperature curves for the 3 types of firing).
