Workshop :
Ceramic jewellery: the essentials

Instructor :
Violaine Ulmer

Objective: An approach to contemporary ceramic jewellery

Ceramic jewellery is unique in that it involves two areas of expertise: ceramics and jewellery.

The course will therefore focus on the question of how a ceramic piece can be assembled to become a piece of jewellery.

Three distinct working periods: 1- the first two days: working with porcelain 2- the 3rd day is devoted to the rudiments of working with metal 3- the last two days consist of using classic jewellery-making techniques to mount the porcelain pieces created on the first two days.

This course is aimed at people who want to start making ceramic jewellery, as well as those who already have experience in this field.

Ceramic part

Making porcelain modules in anticipation of assembly possibilities.

Beforehand, I will show you different types of assembly for necklaces, brooches and earrings (basic techniques and variations). This will enable you to anticipate the possibilities of hooks for the assemblies.

We can then move on to making porcelain pieces using modelling, stamping or casting techniques.

The pieces will be single-fired before moving on to the actual jewellery making.

Jewellery part

During this session, we will look for the most suitable assemblies for your pieces.

This will be an opportunity to try your hand at working with metal: soldering, the principles of making rings and chains, etc.

The mountings can be made with metal, but also with any other type of material you choose.
